Legacy Five & The Freedom Singers
07-21-2011 | 5:30 P.M. - 10:00 P.M.
LEGACY FIVE
Legacy Five took the stage in January of 2000 and in their first year, their debut project titled "Strong in the Strength" which garnered a Favorite Album of the Year nomination. The group’s first single release from that album titled "I Stand Redeemed" was also nominated for Song of the Year.
In 2004, Legacy Five all but swept the Singing News Fan Awards winning the Favorite Group, as well as Favorite Pianist, Favorite Baritone and Favorite Bass. They also launched their highly successful Celebration events, bringing together gospel music’s finest artists and hundreds of Legacy Five fans to the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, TN, for three days of fun, fellowship and spiritual rejuvenation. These three day events are still going strong over Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.
Legacy Five’s first decade has been marked with countless Singing News Fan Awards as well as several Dove Award nominations, but Scott Fowler says, "the most rewarding accolades are the ones we get in the form of letters from the people we sing to. People telling us how a song we sang ministered to them or encouraged them. The personal testimonies of God’s goodness in folk’s lives and knowing that our efforts are making an eternal difference, is why we do what we do."
THE FREEDOM SINGERS
The Freedom Singers began their music ministry when Simon and Wesley arrived in Canada as stowaways. At the time in their native land, Romania, after high school, all young men were forced to join the army. As Christians, they couldn't join the army because freedom of worship was restricted. Refusing to join would result in years of imprisonment and persecution. Determined to escape to freedom, the two faced danger and hardship fleeing to Italy. Their nightmare began when they crawled into a container of ceramic tiles heading across the ocean. Baking in the heat for days in a shipyard, a tremendous storm at sea, suffering from lack of oxygen and the agony of thirst, Simon and Wesley came close to death. It is only by God's grace that they are alive today.
In 2006, Simon's brother joined them. The name "Freedom Singers" was most appropriate, considering the backgrounds of Simon and Wesley and what they endured to be able to worship their God in freedom and peace.
